In 1950 the Friends of Alford Hospital was formed to buy equipment for Alford Hospital, that was not available on the NHS. The Friends of Alford Hospital became a charity in it's own right in 1985.
The original Trustees of the charity, worked tirelessly to ensure that the community of Alford, had access to clinics and equipment, transport to and from Alford was troublesome to say the least, and so fundraising took place regularly to ensure that money would not be a barrier to providing the services required.
Unfortunately, Cottage and small hospitals were being shut down throughout England and the trustees found themselves, along with their volunteers and members of the Alford Community, campaigning and petitioning to keep their local Hospital.
The Friends of Alford Hospital fought a long and sustained campaign but in September 1990 Alford Hospital closed it's door for the final time. The building was sold for less than £100,000 and has been turned into flats. However, the Memorial Hospital inscription is still visible today.
The War Memorial Hall
The new modern building was opened by on January 7th 1994 by Councillor Michael Kennedy of East Lindsey. The Hall was built in the style of an old school, in a conservation area of Alford. The Alford War Memorial Hall is solely owned by the Friends of Alford Alford and is run entirely on donations and grants.
Many of the original Trustees are still involved in the running of the Hall, along with second generations of the same families. The dedication of everyone involved in Alford War Memorial Hall, the Friends of Alford Hospital and the service they provide to the community is something that we all feel extremely proud about.
